Being a certified lifeguard opens the doors for summer job opportunities, as well as providing a way to help protect those around you!
We offer Red Cross Certification courses throughout the year. Red Cross Lifeguarding classes are offered in May. We also offer CPR classes during the year. Our staff can do CPR classes on site for businesses throughout Hamilton County and surrounding counties. Please contact us to schedule a class. If you do not see a class that works for you, please submit a Class Request and we will contact you to try and schedule something.

Lifeguard Certification Prerequisites:
- Must be at least 15 years old
- Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence to be completed at the start of the first in-person skills session:
- Jump into the water submerge resurface, swim 150 yards (6 lengths of a competition-length pool) using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
- Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.
- Swim goggles are allowed.
- Immediately into a 2-minute tread, maintaining position at the surface of the water using only the legs.
- Followed immediately by another 50 yards swim (2 lengths of a competition-length pool) using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
- Jump into the water submerge resurface, swim 150 yards (6 lengths of a competition-length pool) using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds,
- Starting in the water and swimming 20 yards
- Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 12 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object from the bottom
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point holding the object at the surface with both hands
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps
The total swim distance for the prereqs is 200 yards. This is 8 lengths (4 laps) of a competition-length pool. A standard competition-length pool is the same length as a high school pool (25 yards). Please make sure you are physically prepared and capable of completing this before the course begins. Refunds will not be given to individuals who cannot complete the prerequisites.
Lifeguard Certification Blended Learning Format:
- 7-hour online portion must be completed before in-person
- 21.5 Hours of In-Person Skills Sessions

Lifeguard Recertification Prerequisites:
- Must have a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification
- Red Cross Lifeguard Certification must be current or less than 30 days expired as of date of recertification
- We can only recertify Red Cross lifeguard certifications. We cannot recertify participants who hold StarGuard, YMCA, American Lifeguard Association, etc. certifications. If you hold a certification other than Red Cross, you must be recertified through that organization.

- Swim 150 yards (6 lengths of a competition-length pool) using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both

- Must have a current American Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguarding certification
- Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguard Certification must be current or less than 30 days expired as of date of recertification
- We can only recertify Red Cross lifeguard certifications. We cannot recertify participants who hold StarGuard, YMCA, American Lifeguard Association, etc. certifications. If you hold a certification other than Red Cross, you must be recertified through that organization.
- Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence:
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
- Swimming on the back or side is not permitted
- Swim goggles are allowed
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs, floating, or both. Participants must only tread water, not float, when the water depth of training is greater than 5 feet.
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
- Complete final in-water skill assessments
- Pass a final written test
